Buying Guide

Not sure which e-bike is right for you? This guide covers the main things to think about. If you'd still like a hand, get in touch. We're happy to help you choose.

1. Start with how you'll ride

Commuting and errands A commuter e-bike is light, upright and easy to handle on roads and bike paths.
Sand, gravel and the beach Fat tyre e-bikes have wide tyres that float over soft ground and smooth out bumps.
Easy on and off Step-through frames have a low frame you don't need to swing your leg over. They're great for shorter riders or anyone with stiff hips or knees.
Small spaces, caravans and boats Folding e-bikes pack down to fit in a car boot or storage cupboard.
Trails and hills Mountain and trail e-bikes have suspension and grippy tyres for rough ground.
Carrying kids, shopping or extra stability Cargo bikes and trikes carry passengers or a big load, or give you three-wheel stability.
Young riders Kids' e-bikes include electric balance bikes for little ones and electric dirt bikes for older kids and teens.

2. Check the key specs

  • Motor: Australian rules for pedal-assist e-bikes (EPACs) allow up to 250W of continuous power, with the assistance cutting out at 25 km/h. Each product page lists the bike's motor details. Road rules vary between states, so check your local rules.
  • Battery and range: bigger batteries (measured in watt-hours, Wh) give you more range. The range figures on product pages are estimates. Real range depends on rider weight, hills, assist level, temperature and battery age.
  • Weight: e-bikes are heavier than regular bikes. If you'll be lifting it into a car or up stairs, look at the bike weight and consider a folding model.
  • Brakes: hydraulic disc brakes need less effort and stop well in the wet. Mechanical discs are simpler to adjust at home.
  • Suspension: a front fork smooths out rough paths, and dual suspension is best for trails.

3. Get the right fit

Our bike pages list the recommended rider height for each model. If you're between sizes or unsure, a step-through frame is usually the most forgiving choice. For kids' bikes, follow the manufacturer's age, height and weight guidance on the product page. Kids should always ride with adult supervision.

4. Choose a brand

  • Mamba makes great-value everyday e-bikes, with fat tyre, step-through, folding, trekking and dual-suspension models.
  • Vamos makes premium commuter, folding and cargo e-bikes, plus electric trikes.
  • Zippi makes electric balance bikes and kids' e-bikes.
  • FXB makes kids' and teens' electric balance and dirt bikes.

Every bike comes with its manufacturer's warranty, as well as your rights under the Australian Consumer Law.
